Kumkumadi Tailam
The classical saffron face oil, for tone, glow, and dark spots.
A centuries-old medicated face oil in which real saffron and the classical complexion herbs are slow-cooked into a sesame-oil base. A nightly ritual oil traditionally used to even tone, soften dark spots, and leave skin luminous by morning.

Founder-led · Made in India · Pure, honest formulation
Kumkuma means saffron and taila means oil, so kumkumadi tailam is, at heart, the saffron oil. It is a classical Ayurvedic medicated oil, traced to the Ashtanga Hridaya, where an oil of this kind is described for vyanga, the dark facial patches modern dermatology would call melasma.
Alongside saffron sit the varnya (complexion-brightening) herbs the tradition prized, sandalwood, manjistha, and licorice among them, slow-cooked into a base of sesame oil until their qualities pass into the fat, which then carries them into the skin. Facial oiling is simply abhyanga applied to the face, a habit the classical texts praised long before serums existed.
It is a nightly ritual oil, not a quick fix. Used consistently, a tiny amount most nights is how it earns its glow.
How it is made
What makes a real kumkumadi
A true kumkumadi is a classical medicated oil, not fragrance stirred into base oil. Three things separate the real thing from the imitations.
A classical formula
Traced to the Ashtanga Hridaya, it pairs saffron with the varnya (complexion) herbs, sandalwood, manjistha, and licorice, chosen to brighten and calm the skin.
Slow-cooked, not blended
The herbs and saffron are slow-cooked into a sesame-oil base, the classical taila method, so their qualities pass into the oil, which then carries them into the skin. That is what a medicated oil actually means.
Genuinely saffron-rich
Real saffron is costly, which is why an authentic kumkumadi is never cheap. We use genuine saffron, not fragrance, because that is where the brightening truly comes from.

A slow, calming nightly facial massage ritual
The right moments
- At night, as the nourish step after cleansing

- Nightly for six to eight weeks, to judge it fairly
The ritual, step by step
- 1
Cleanse and pat dry
At night, on clean skin.
- 2
Warm 3 to 4 drops
A tiny amount for the whole face; more only clogs and stains the pillow.
- 3
Dot across the face
Five points: forehead, both cheeks, nose, and chin.
- 4
Massage upward
Light upward and outward strokes for two to three minutes, do not rub.
- 5
Absorb, then rinse
Leave overnight, or twenty minutes for oily skin, and rinse in the morning.
Nothing you cannot pronounce
Saffron (kumkuma)
the brightening heart of the oil, rich in crocin and crocetin
Sandalwood (chandana)
cooling and calming for warm, easily reddened skin
Manjistha (Rubia cordifolia)
the classical complexion and blood-purifying herb
Licorice (yashtimadhu)
traditionally brightening and soothing
Sesame oil base
slow-cooked with the herbs so their qualities pass into the oil, the classical taila method
Best suited to
- Dry, normal, combination, or Pitta-warm skin
- Anyone working on uneven tone, dark spots, or dullness
- Those who enjoy a slow, nourishing nightly ritual
Good to know
- Oily or acne-prone skin: the sesame base is moderately comedogenic. Use one drop, leave twenty minutes then rinse, and skip it on active acne
- Always patch test first; saffron and botanicals can occasionally sensitise
- Pregnancy: patch test and check with your doctor or practitioner first
- Wear sunscreen by day; no brightening oil outruns daily sun on the same spots

The full guide: kumkumadi tailam benefits, ingredients, and how to use it→Before you ask
How long does it take to show results?+
Think in weeks, not days. Saffron's brightening action in studies was measured over eight weeks, and skin renews on a monthly cycle. Used nightly and consistently, most people look for a subtle evening-out of tone and glow at six to eight weeks, not overnight.
Can I use it on oily or acne-prone skin?+
Cautiously. The sesame base is moderately comedogenic and can clog pores prone to breakouts. Use only a drop or two, leave it on for twenty minutes rather than overnight, rinse in the morning, and stop if you see congestion. Patch test first, and skip it on active acne.
Should I apply it in the morning or at night?+
Night is the classical and practical choice. Skin repairs while you sleep, the oil has hours to absorb, and you avoid wearing an oil under sunscreen and makeup. If you use it by day, apply a tiny amount and always follow with sunscreen.
Do I still need sunscreen if I use kumkumadi?+
Yes, always, especially since you are working on tone and pigmentation. A facial oil seals moisture but is not a substitute for daytime SPF, which is the single biggest protector of an even complexion.
