Your hair ritual
keshya
Ayurveda treats hair as a tissue fed from within, so the ritual works on three fronts: the scalp, the plate, and daily rhythm. Warm oiling is the part you feel first.
Here are the hair rituals, and the oils that carry them.
Why your hair deserves a ritual.
In Ayurveda, hair is an upadhatu, a by-product of bone tissue and of how well you are nourished overall. That one idea changes everything: hair is not a surface to be styled but a report card of the body beneath it, and its ritual works on the scalp, the plate, and the day's rhythm together.
You feel this already. Hair is among the first things stress touches, and the first thing that tells on a season of bad sleep, crash diets, or illness.
The numbers keep the tradition honest: losing up to around a hundred strands a day is normal renewal, and hair grows only about a centimetre a month, which is why anything that promises dramatic overnight growth is selling you the calendar. What genuinely moves the needle is unglamorous and old: regular scalp oiling and massage, washing that does not strip, iron and protein on the plate, and stress kept in its place.
And the aspirational part needs no explaining in India: a thick plait, a full crown, hair that moves. It has meant vitality here for five thousand years. The ritual is how that is quietly built and kept, strand by strand, week by week.
You already know the signs.
It starts small. A few more strands on the pillow, a shower drain you clean more often, a parting that looks a little wider in photographs than it did last year.
The scalp turns dry and flaky in winter or oily and itchy in the damp months, and the answer is usually a harsher shampoo, which strips more, which makes everything worse. The champi your grandmother insisted on becomes a memory instead of a habit.
Hair lost to months of neglect takes many more months to rebuild, because it grows a centimetre at a time. The earlier the ritual starts, the less there is to regret.
A few small acts, every day.
Hair asks for three things: warm oil on the scalp, a wash that respects it, and real food from within. Here is how.
shiro abhyanga
WeeklyThe champi, the oldest hair treatment there is.
Warm oil, worked slowly into the scalp, once or twice a week: this is the champi, and Ayurveda considers it the single most important act of hair care. It feeds the follicles, eases the scalp, calms the nervous system, and, done before bed, deepens sleep.
The right herbs matter: bhringraj, amla, and their companions have been infused into hair oils for centuries for exactly this ritual.
What to do
- 1Warm the oil slightly; apply with fingertips in small circles, scalp first, lengths after.
- 2Give it ten minutes of slow massage, then leave it an hour or overnight.
- 3Twice a week if hair is dry or falling; once a week for maintenance.
