Your nose ritual
nasya
The nose, Ayurveda says, is the doorway to the head. A drop or two of oil in each nostril, pratimarsha nasya, is a gentle daily ritual for our dry, air-conditioned, screen-lit lives.
The nasal ritual, and the oils made for it.
Why your nose deserves a ritual.
Nasa hi shiraso dwaram, says the classical text: the nose is the doorway to the head. Ayurveda treats that doorway with daily respect, a drop or two of oil in each nostril, pratimarsha nasya, to keep the passage moist, clear, and guarded.
Every breath you take is filtered, warmed, and humidified by the nose before it reaches the lungs, roughly twenty thousand breaths a day through two narrow, delicate passages.
When those passages dry out, in air-conditioned offices, on flights, through dusty commutes, the filter falters: mouth breathing takes over, throats turn scratchy, sleep gets noisier, and every passing infection finds an easier door. Keeping the lining moist is not exotic; it is maintenance of your first line of defence.
There is a quieter gain too. A clear nose is a clear voice and an easy, silent breath, the difference you feel in a morning presentation and your family hears in your sleep.
You already know the signs.
The dry, crusted nose after every flight and every long day in the AC. The scratchy throat each morning that fades by noon, because the night was spent mouth breathing.
The blocked, heavy feeling that arrives with every change of season and every dusty commute, and the snoring that everyone else notices first.
A doorway left dry and unguarded lets more through: dust deeper, infections easier, sleep shallower. Two drops of oil a day is the oldest, simplest door-keeping there is.
A few small acts, every day.
The nose asks for little: oil to keep it moist, steam to keep it clear, and a guard before the dust. Here is how.
pratimarsha nasya
MorningTwo drops that guard the doorway.
Pratimarsha nasya is the gentle daily form of the classical treatment: one or two drops of a medicated oil in each nostril, sniffed softly in. It moistens the lining, steadies it against dust and dryness, and clears the head in the way users describe as a small opening of a window.
Morning suits most people, after the mouth ritual, before the day's dust.
What to do
- 1Tilt the head slightly back; place one or two drops in each nostril.
- 2Sniff gently, then massage the sides of the nose for a few seconds.
- 3Daily in dry seasons and AC-heavy weeks; skip during a heavy cold.
