Rasaratna Samuccaya belongs to Rasashastra, the alchemical and iatrochemical stream of Ayurveda that studies the medicinal use of metals, minerals, gems, and above all processed mercury (parada). By the medieval period this stream had produced many texts, and Rasaratna Samuccaya was composed to gather the scattered knowledge of that tradition into one ordered, teachable whole.
Its dating is genuinely debated. It is most commonly placed around the 13th century CE, with several scholars narrowing the composition to roughly 1250 to 1300, since its distinctive descriptions are not found in works before about the 12th century. Others read the surviving form as later still, and the text is sometimes dated across a 13th to 16th century range. What is clear is that it stands at a mature point in the tradition, looking back on earlier rasa texts and organising them.
A foundation, not a footnote.
Rasaratna Samuccaya is widely regarded as the foremost classical text of Rasashastra. Where the older alchemical writings often leaned toward dhatuvada, the transmutation of base metals into gold, this text leans firmly toward dehavada, the use of processed minerals to heal and strengthen the human body. That shift of emphasis, from turning metal into gold to turning metal into medicine, is much of why it became the reference every later rasa vaidya returned to.
It matters, too, because it is so complete and so practical. It does not only list substances; it describes the whole working world of the rasa physician, the qualities the practitioner must have, the building of the laboratory, the apparatus, the furnaces, the weights and measures, and the exact sequences of purification. It reads like a master handing over a working craft, not a shelf of theory.
For a modern reader it is also the clearest window into how Ayurveda approached metals and minerals with respect and caution. Nothing here is used raw. Every substance passes through elaborate purification and processing before it is considered fit for the body, which is precisely the discipline that makes these preparations the work of trained hands and never a home experiment.

The work runs as thirty chapters (adhyayas) in two halves: a first half (purvardha) on materials, people, tools, and processes, and a second half (uttarardha) on the medicines themselves.

The first half of Rasaratna Samuccaya is essentially the foundation of a working practice. It begins with mercury, the substance around which the whole science turns, then sets out the great and secondary minerals, the metals and gems, and how each is identified and purified. It then turns to the human and physical setting: who is fit to do this work, how the rasashala is built and equipped, what the apparatus and furnaces are, and how substances are measured and processed.
A central theme running through it is the samskaras of mercury, the sequence of purification and processing steps that transform raw, toxic quicksilver into a medicinal material. The tradition counts these in stages, most commonly eighteen in all, with the first eight (the ashta samskara) considered essential before mercury is ever used. Only after such processing is a substance thought safe and effective.
The second half is the pharmacy. It lays out hundreds of formulations, prominent among them the bhasmas, the fine calcined ash-medicines made by repeatedly purifying and incinerating a metal or mineral until it is rendered into a subtle, assimilable form. These are organised by the conditions they treat, which is what makes the text a clinical reference and not only an alchemical one.
