The Sharangadhara Samhita was composed several centuries after the great foundational texts, at a time when Ayurveda already had its philosophy and its major treatises settled. What it lacked was a single, clear, practical manual of preparation: how to turn a plant or a mineral into a finished medicine, in what form, and in what exact dose. Sharngadhara set out to fill that gap.
Rather than argue first principles, he gathered and organised the working knowledge of the tradition, the formulation types, the methods, the weights and measures, into a compact and orderly reference. Because of this, the text reads less like a debate and more like a trusted recipe book and dispensary manual, which is precisely why it endured and became one of the Laghu Trayi, the lesser triad, alongside the Madhava Nidana and the Bhava Prakasha.
A foundation, not a footnote.
The Sharangadhara Samhita is the go-to classical reference for bhaishajya kalpana, the science of pharmaceutics: how medicines are formulated, standardised, and measured. Before it, this knowledge was scattered across many texts; Sharngadhara pulled it into one systematic account of formulation types (powders, decoctions, medicated oils, fermented preparations, pills, and more), along with the weights and measures a physician needs to get a dose right.
It is also a landmark in diagnosis. It gives the first systematic account of nadi pariksha, pulse diagnosis, in the Ayurvedic corpus. The reading of the pulse as a window into the state of the doshas, so central to how many Ayurvedic physicians still examine a patient today, is taught here in a clear and teachable form for the first time.
The text is notable too for reflecting the medicine of its age: it includes early mentions of opium and of certain metallic and mineral preparations (rasa dravyas), marking the growing role of rasashastra, the Ayurvedic alchemy of processed minerals, in mainstream practice. In short, it is the practical, hands-on member of the classical canon, the one a dispensary actually used.

Purva Khanda (the first part)

Uttara Khanda (the final part)
The application in treatment: external and purification therapies such as oleation, sudation, enema, nasal medication, and the use of formulations in practice. 13 chapters.
The Sharangadhara Samhita is, at heart, a working manual. It opens with the vocabulary and the measuring standards a physician must share with an apothecary, then moves methodically through the ways a medicine can be made, and finally into how those medicines are applied to the body.
Its most-used middle section is a complete tour of formulation types. If you have ever taken an Ayurvedic churna (powder), kwatha (decoction), taila (medicated oil), or vati (pill), the logic of how it was prepared and dosed traces back to the categories laid down here. This is the text that turned Ayurvedic pharmacy from an art passed hand to hand into something written down, standardised, and repeatable.
Alongside pharmacy, it carries the first orderly teaching of pulse examination and an honest reflection of its era's expanding materia medica, including mineral and metallic preparations and the early use of opium.
